Out for an impromptu sketching session yesterday in the quirky, artsy South A Street (SOFA) district in Santa Rosa. This time, The Spinster Sisters Cafe was my subject. The restaurant currently has some great take-out options or a beautiful patio for dinning. Painted on location.

This month we have another special location selected at Jacuzzi Vineyards located in the town of Sonoma. There is no cost to attend the event. . . the grounds open at 10am – (the olive event begins at 11am). We’ll sketch from 10am till 1pm, then share our sketches. There will be all types of snacky foods and a food cart (coffee-sandwiches). We sketched here 2 years ago and it was fun, fun, fun! So happy we’re going back.
We’re allowed to bring chairs and stools, but no oil paints. Easels must be kept out of the way of traffic. From their website: “Don Landis of Don’s Olives presents an all things Olive experience at Jacuzzi Family Vineyards in Sonoma, CA. All your senses will be stimulated! Savor unique Olives, taste delicious Olive oil and have Olive inspired food for snack. Feast your eyes on Olive art served up by ceramists, photographers and painters. Have your thirst for Olive knowledge quenched by Olive tree experts, notables from U.C.Davis and local folks. Enjoy fabulous Jacuzzi Family Vineyards wine…attendees can enjoy a special 15% discount on wine (wine tasting fees apply) and Olive oil in The Olive Press and Jacuzzi Family Vineyards gift shops all weekend. Tour The Olive Press Olive oil mill, browse the gift shops and relax in the beautiful courtyard with Italian music in the air…its entertaining, delicious and fun.”
The next “Ready, Set, Sketch” group outing is Saturday September 14 in Forestville.
We’ll meet in front of Nightingale Breads (6665 Front St., Forestville, CA). Plenty of parking is located across the street where the West County Regional Trail begins. For sketching, we have options! You can stay in town and sketch buildings, businesses and more. Or walk along the West County Regional Trail, which is a mostly paved, 5.5-mile trail linking Sebastopol, Graton and Forestville. The path is separated from Highway 116 and offers views of farms, pastures, and vineyards. The trail is popular for walking, running, and cycling (and for today, sketching!). Spring and fall are particularly beautiful times of the year to take in the surrounding countryside. Please join us! No experience is necessary. All you need is something to draw on and something to draw with. But don’t forget a hat, sunscreen, water, and a chair to sit on.

Hello sketchers! I’m thankful for the tons of rain we received this winter but I’m even happier that sun is forecast for this Saturday! Woohoo! This month I’ve scoped out a great new location, the Sheraton Sonoma County near the Petaluma river. This hotel/business park has a lot to offer. Boats, the Petaluma River, a marsh trail, the overpass, even the hotel itself is worth sketching! So don’t miss it! We’ll meet at the north end of the business park on the west side of the parking lot. From the 101 head east on 116 and take a quick right at Baywood Dr.For those of you that need some quick fuel, Bright Bear Bakery is just up the road and looks fantastic. And of course, Starbucks is also just a little further along the 116.
When: Saturday April 13, 10:00am-1:00pm Where: Sheraton Sonoma County/Business Park Who: Anyone who has a desire to sketch can join us. Why: Because we love to sketch!
This month we have a special sketching location, Shone farms. I have never been there but I’ve been told by more than one person, it’s a great place to sketch.
Info from their website:
Shone Farm is a 365-acre outdoor learning laboratory for the Santa Rosa Junior College’s Agriculture/Natural Resources Department. The farm provides students with hands-on experience that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. The farm is located about 12 miles from the Santa Rosa Campus, between the towns of Forestville and Windsor, in the heart of the Russian River Valley AVA (American Viticulture Area). It was named in honor of Robert Shone, a very active leader in Sonoma County agriculture, in addition to being a Santa Rosa Junior College trustee and President of the Sonoma County Farm Bureau.
TIME: 10am-1pm
DATE: Saturday Sept 8
WHERE: Shone Farms (meet at The Dutton Pavilion).
Please join us, no experience is necessary. All you need is something to draw on and something to draw with (it’s also nice to have a folding chair, some bottled water, and a hat).
Hope to see you there!

I know it’s been a difficult week for all of us in dealing with the fires. Some more than others, I’m sure but I hope you are someplace safe and your family and friends are all accounted for.
After careful consideration, I’ve decided to postpone this month’s sketching meet-up. It seems this afternoon that more evacuation notices have been handed out to Geyserville and now parts of Healdsburg too. I certainly hope all these fires get put out soon.
Please heed any warnings to evacuate if you are advised to do so!
